My Grandfather, Oliver Weems—Affectionately Known as “Big Slim”
 

For my grandfather, barbecue was more than food—it was a dream. Although he was unable to carry that dream to completion, the vision never faded.
 

His journey began at 103rd and Halsted, across from Gatling’s Funeral Home. There, Big Slim faithfully served delicious barbecue to the community while also operating a watermelon stand. Through hard work, great food, and a heart for the neighborhood, he created a legacy that would live far beyond him.
 

When the Lord caused Big Slim to slow down, He created an opportunity to speak to his heart. While seated one day, my grandfather told me, “As soon as I get up, I’m going to show you the business and turn it all over to you. I’m getting too old for this,” followed by his familiar laugh.
 

Sadly, he never got the opportunity to stand again. God chose to lay him down and lift me up—and today, I have the honor of carrying his vision forward and fulfilling the dream he started.

Today, Oliver’s Backyard BBQ is proudly led by Oliver Jr. and built on a foundation of faith, family, community, and legacy. With every plate we serve, we honor Big Slim’s memory and move one step closer to becoming one of Chicago’s premier barbecue establishments.
 

His dream lives on—and this is only the beginning.
